Well put.

Here's another shot from my recent Beijing/China trip. This one was taken atop the Beijing TV tower and facing some brilliantly lit buildings. On the right bottom corner here, the dark area is a construction zone. I can't wait to see how this area changes as new buildings are completed. The last shot I shared here was taken from the same location, but looking in the opposite direction. *Note:* I uploaded this one in full resolution, try zooming in and looking at the detail. Pretty nifty :)

Here's another byproduct result from coalescing all of my annual Lightroom catalogs into a single master. I find myself exploring my past work much more frequently, which usually results in me starting over with editing images that I'm particularly fond of. This gazebo in Hopkinton, MA is a perfect example of starting over and applying new techniques for a more refined result.

DUMBO Redux
I've always had fondness for this image of DUMBO in my hometown of Brooklyn, NY. I remember taking it so many years ago and I remember editing and processing for the first time, as well. When I completed this updated edit and compared it to the first finished version, the delta was staggering. Sure, sure. It's all subjective but where's the fun in leaving it at that? The prior version was awful compared to this one. Both exhibit stronger stylization techniques compared to, say, a waterfall image but I for one am really happy when I can compare an edit from today to one from several years ago and see a clear evolution and refinement in style.
Don't ever think that just because you've shared an image with the world that you can't go back, start over from scratch, and implement the new techniques that you've picked up along the way. We are all growing and I pity the person who feels that they've learned all there is to learn about this art and this craft.

Is The Last of Us the best game of this console generation?
I've played a lot of games this generation. Everything from action-packed first person shooters to trivia games to sci-fi RPG's to Japanese RPG's to adventure - you get the idea. Well. Last night I finished The Last of Us. Not only have I never felt so afraid in a game this generation, but I didn't really feel like I was playing a game at all. With incredible graphics, grisly violence, on-point voice acting, and subtle facial expressions, The Last of Us created a dystopian future that I felt a part of. With nature having reclaimed the society over the course of 20 years after a fungal outbreak that turned humanity into hosts of a violent virus, the game world looks and feels as desolate as your situation.
Tasked with bringing a girl named Ellie across the country you, Joel, are a hardened, every man survivor at all costs. Ellie has been born into a world without electricity, jobs, or other modern luxuries while Joel very vividly remembers what life was like before the outbreak. For reasons I won't spoil, Joel is forced not only to take Ellie to the drop off point, but also open up to her as well. The whole thing plays out through the better part of a year as you teach Ellie how to survive and scavenge through a world mostly exhausted of useful supplies from other survivors. You consider your supplies in every encounter you have, always having to use stealth in at least some capacity to survive. It was truly scary and I jumped more than a few times. When the tension is high, The Last of Us is a better Resident Evil or Silent Hill than Resident Evil or Silent Hill. It's incredible. What's scarier is that the situations you find yourself in aren't contrived, supernatural, or set pieces.
The story is a story told a million times, but The Last of Us actually creates a situation where you feel desperate, underpowered, and often at conflict Joel's decisions. You may not like Joel all the time, but the game spends the necessary time to explain why he's the way he is. You'll encounter a bevy of characters throughout your journey and while they may be fairly typical fair, each has a twist that makes them feel fresh. Some of the twists can only be found by exploring the environment while makes the exposition not feel like it's beating you over the head. The ending is an ending you will remember and while some events you can see coming a mile away, others will catch you completely off guard.
The gameplay itself isn't perfect. Your AI counterparts will run directly at an infected during a stealth section and the infected will just choose to ignore them. Some of the gunplay felt unfair at times as well with one-hit kills coming out of nowhere. That being said, the positives vastly outweigh the negatives. Stealth plays a huge part in the gameplay and you're given an actual choice of how to handle each encounter. With only four main enemy types in the game, you'd think that you'd get tired of the gunfights, and while sometimes you do, the only reason why is because you want to see what happens next in the story.
So....is The Last of Us the best game of this console generation? Is it better than Mass Effect or Uncharted or Bioshock or Grand Theft Auto IV? Yes. And why? Because all though I was reminded that I was playing a game at times, The Last of Us has come the closest to creating an immersive, emotional, and realistic experience - one that games before have tried to do and failed at.

[It's the Dad that counts.]
When I was in middle school, my dad took a trip to Thailand for a few weeks for the first time. He came back bearing a ruddy tan, exotic stories of living luxuriously for only $1/day, and a gift for me.
"I know you like things with cartoons on them, so I got you this," he beamed proudly, handing me the blue fleece beanie with a patch of Mickey Mouse embroidered on. My eyes bounced between the cartoon figure and my dad's expecting, slate green eyes as I held back an amused chuckle. I didn't have the heart to tell him that Mickey Mouse was soooo mainstream, and I only liked obscure, or ironic cartoons, so I graciously took the soft hat in my hands and embraced him in a hug, my heart bursting a little at my dad's precious attempt at nailing a "cool" gift for his pre-teen daughter. I think I wore the beanie once, then shoved it at the bottom of my drawer.
A couple years later I unwrapped my dad's birthday gift to me-John Mayer's debut CD, which was then climbing up the charts, but which I had no real interest in-, and had a moment of confusion until my dad, once again, earnestly explained his intention. "I remembered us singing his single together in the car a little while back when it was playing on the radio. You really like him, right?"
My face remained a blank slate. I had no idea who John Mayer even was. My dad jumped in with the chorus. "'I want to run through the halls of my high school. I wanna scream at the top of my lungs!'...?" The memory of us singing came flashing back and I recovered with a bursting smile of gratitude. I still didn't really know who John Mayer was, and I could barely claim to like the song, let alone even desire the entire album, but I was once again touched by my dad's thoughtfulness, as off-the-mark as it was.
But before you start thinking my dad is some out-of-touch square who only knows about the mainstream, let me repair his reputation with this photo of us at Burning Man 2007--the year I went only because he dragged me after raving to me about his experiences there. Fact is, my dad has been mastering le cool way longer than any of us have, and I'm lucky to have inherited even a fraction of his hip genes.
Thanks for always being so rad, Dad. You didn't always hit the bullseye, but free-thinkers never do. That's precisely why we we love them, and most certainly why I love you.

Today is my 30th birthday, so I'm writing this letter to Google
I'm going to put all the jokes about my youth coming to a close aside and talk about something that I usually don't ever speak of. The wave of technology in the past couple decades has been amazing. I used a lite brite as a kid. Now 3 year olds are using iPads. We've reached whole new levels but have somehow managed to ignore people with disabilities who could really benefit from these advancements. I know we all want to create things for recreation, but how about helping some people out along the way.
Hearing disabilities are rarely ever talked about and if you watched that deaf girl hear for the first time on youtube about a year ago, you'd think that deafness had been cured once and for all. Less than 1% of hearing impaired people in the U .S. could even benefit from the type of surgery she received, a procedure which even then costs $100,000 and is not covered by insurance. The rest have a different type of deafness or disability. Hearing impairment is not just for old people and in the 23 years since I got my first pair of hearing aids, the technology has barely changed at all. The cost hasn't changed either. I am blessed to have many other advantages in life and I barely consider this one to be a disability, but having watched the rest of the world transform from the Flinstones to the Jetsons, I can't help but wonder if it's almost too late for progress to start being made. How can an ear microphone seriously cost 5 grand?
If I had to make one request for a birthday present this year, it'd be for Google to announce an initiative to tackle this problem. If they can make Google Glass for $1,500 and talk about making it cheaper, then surely they can make affordable hearing aids and upgrade the tech by 20 years. Today I am 30, but a part of me has felt 80 years old since I was 7.
People say your message can get heard on Google+. I'm curious to see if that's true.

Did some house-cleaning. Actually, maybe not cleaning...
So it recently was pointed out to me that I had a gallery on here called "Photography Grab-bag" that was like 85% of my project of shooting artistic nudes in ruined buildings, and the occasional weird photo with an octopus, a dead bird, or some other bizarre thing. This doesn't make a lot of sense, since this is a cohesive project, so now there's a folder specifically for my model photography. Enjoy!

Turns out they were travelling out west to shoot the video for the song featured below. Her album 'The Real' will be out in the US on July 9th. Kick Your Fear of Failure Once and for All
The fear of failure has probably stopped more great things from happening than anything else. Nobody wants to fail, but the fear of it can leave us living lives that we never wanted.
At the end of your days, which always comes far too soon, do you want to look back and say, "I wish I had played it safer,"?
No.
If you do say that at the end of your days, the closest person should punch you right in the stomach.
I've found the one thing that scares me more than failure. If you saw my teaser image yesterday, you probably already know what it is.
In this post I go through some examples of huge failures whom we can only hope to be half as successful as.
I have also included a set of desktop, tablet, and smartphone wallpapers that will serve as constant reminders to not fear failure!
What could you accomplish if you stopped fearing failure, and did things that really matter?

That being said, the nasty behavior directed at one another here on G+ does not. I just don't... and hopefully will never understand why some people can't be nice.
Disagreement is fine, but getting personal is unnecessary and speaks poorly of one's character. So why do some people feel the need to attack?

Question of the Day
How do you handle the death of a friend?
Until yesterday, I’d lost very few friends, and only one who was purely an online friend.
Yes, there were other online acquaintances that have passed, but only one who was close.
Now he is joined by another.
There is a very unique pain that comes with losing someone that you've only known via a computer screen. In some ways, and especially on the more writing oriented networks, the friendships are stronger than an offline relationship in that a person is discovered almost as if by reading their diary.
There are less preconceptions, and a bigger window to understanding.
I have found that my reaction to the loss of a friend is to become quietly contemplative of what I have learnt from that friend. Lessons in how to do things, and how not to do other things.
And the closer the friend, the more time I need to spend in contemplation.
It was great to have known you, +J.C. Kendall, even for barely two years. Rest well, brother.

~With Grace~
And with Grace I look up.. ..
And see the glorious.. and experience clarity..and expansion..
The spiral starts upward.. reaching to heights..
One with the tall trees.. life..
Through the gentle green leaves,.. life..
And as I am propelled upward my pink petals transform into wings..
From my humble beginning a mere flower on earth..
A whole world is viewed as I reach for the skies and soar,
beyond into vastness.. where stars and universes..become streams of light..
Into heavens dreamt about.. seeing with eternal eyes at first glance.. life..
And become one..with it all and the feeling' ..a connection..
What is forever anyway?
Life' .. unending..
~Perhaps an inner knowing part of Self..

Polyglot teenager speaks 20 languages and counting...
He states this enables him to understand other cultures. He quotes Nelson Mandela who said that addressing someone in his second language is talking to the brain while using his mother tongue is communication directly with the heart.
No wonder Tim started with Hebrew, followed by Arab as he wanted to understand the Palestinian conflict. His ability to pick up new languages is amazing, but I count many polyglots among my friends and they all said it becomes easier the more languages you already know. At his age though it´s an amazing feat and his dedication is admirable.
He doesn´t yet know what to do with his skills and while I hope he will find work in intercultural projects bringing people together I´m afraid the NSA will be the first to make him a job offer ;)

The "Pay What You Want" (PWYW) Payment Model
+Disconnect is a relatively new service to help you better manage your privacy. I just set it up myself this morning. It's too early to have an opinion on it. That's not the point of this post though.
The point of this post is the attached screen captured image of Disconnect's "pay-what-you-want" (PWYW) payment approach. The disconnect.me website prominently features their PWYW approach, and when I went there I quickly noticed that I have the option of dedicating a portion of my payment as a charitable contribution. Which nonprofits the money goes to isn't clear, though a post on the Disconnect blog notes that the contributions go "to nonprofits that make the web better, too."
Wow, nice, I thought. Disconnect is a +B Corporation, so this approach naturally made sense to me. It was cool to see that these folks were so committed.
What's interesting though, is that this mix of payment and charitable contribution may be way more business savvy than you might first assume:
In a large scale experiment conducted in a large amusement park, Gneezy and colleagues tested the effectiveness of PWYW by selling roller coaster photos to park visitors. Their results show that although many more people buy the photo when it is offered under PWYW, the average price paid is very low ($.92), resulting with no income increase to the firm. However, when PWYW was coupled with a charitable cause—buyers were informed they could pay what they wanted AND that half of the amount they pay would be donated to a patient support organization—the average amount paid increased substantially ($6.50), resulting with significant income increase to the firm in addition to generating substantial charitable contribution.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pay_what_you_want
Behavioral economics turns out to to be a smart thing to know. When I read about this upside in PWYW pricing, part of me got a little cynical about Disconnect. But then, I thought: hey, why not? If appealing to our better angels helps these guys raise more money for their good work - and it is good work, I think - then why shouldn't they be able to do it without me second-guessing them?
It's smart business and I think this is the kind of questioning about our standard assumptions of the way things work that we need a lot more of if we truly want business to step out as a greater force for good in the world. These guys are worth keeping an eye on: for their innovative approach and the important work they're doing.
Thanks +Jeff Jockisch for the heads-up on Disconnect.

JONATHAN CHRISTOPHER KENDALL (1962-2013)
With the greatest of sorrow I, +su ann lim , have to inform you that Jonathan Christopher Kendall, my fiancé and love of my life, died suddenly last night on 15 June 2013. Despite the incredible efforts of our friends +Suzanne Jacob +Gaynal Brierley , paramedics and ambulance personnel he could not be revived.
Jonathan lived as he believed, telling it like it is, with wit and humour, enjoying life to the hilt, with honour, directness and compassion. I was incredibly blessed to be the recipient of his immense love, and as each other's beloved, to share unbelievable happiness for too short a time. Jonathan, I LOVE YOU with all my heart and miss you desperately.
One of the favourite activities in his life was to engage with all you here on Google Plus. He thrived on the intellectual challenges, soaked up a vast amount of emerging knowledge, sparred with the best, and indulged in posts/streams/hangouts also for fun. Thank you all for your part in making his life more meaningful and worthwhile.
Jonathan would be pleased if we spent a little time reflecting together the words of Krishnamurti used to introduce his profile:
*"You must understand the whole of life, not just one little part of it. That is why you must read, that is why you must look at the skies, that is why you must sing and dance, and write poems and suffer and understand, for all that is life."

Today, I hit 30,000 circlings... Thank you very much.
Never have I learned so much, so quickly from so many people in my life. I have been moved by so many of your life experiences, spit coffee on my screens because of your humor, blown blue smoke from my ears from some of our debates, but I very much appreciate your interest and support, and I hope to do a better job of engaging with you all in the future.
I am humbled that so many of you have become personal friends of mine, both online and off; just last night I attended an amazing and wonderful dinner party where 4 of the guests were people that I first met right here in this forum.
I joined Google+ in July 2011, somewhat on a lark, not really a fan of the state of Social Media at that time. My first months here where a bit rough to say the least.
Now, if you don't mind, I would like a bit of feedback from you?
I have an insane amount of curiosity, and I would like to learn more about YOU, and I also would honestly like to know why you circled me originally. I have met dozens of you in real life, solely due to our online interactions both personally and professionally, and I think that is an amazing thing.
My time on Google+ has been the most rewarding time of my life, (for more than the obvious reasons) each of you helps me do my job a bit better each day, and you also help make a better person overall.
Dont get me wrong, my temper still flares, and I may speak out of turn, but I hope that I can always admit my mistakes and be better for them. I feel that if I am not making mistakes, I am not learning anything.
I've made a lot of life changes in the past 6 months (lost 60 pounds) while starting the process of living in a new country, not to mention the wonderful woman I met right here on G+. I am no longer the king of things all Gummi Bear, but now I am headed that way with respect to Yoga and Pilates, eating better, living longer, an enjoying life to a much greater degree.
There is something special about Google+, it actually rewards us for sharing ourselves with one another in so many wonderful ways.
Thank you for your circling, thanks for being patient, kind and informative, for it is you folks who make my stream the very best one on all of Google+
Thank you to +Vic Gundotra and his team of merry bandits who strive everyday to make Google+ what it is.
Rock on!

And the winner is....
I took this picture in color and then played with filters to make it b&w. I liked both for different reasons and decided to crowd-source which one would get posted.
I have no idea what the official name of this rose is. Her petals are filled with love and beauty, open to the world, ready and waiting to share her pollen. Her face is wide and her color is vibrant, but short-lived. Too soon, she wilts and fades to white, returning to the ground to live again.

Sweden’s data protection Authority bans Google cloud services over privacy concerns #prism
In a landmark ruling, Sweden’s data protection authority (the Swedish Data Inspection Board) this week issued a decision that prohibits the nation’s public sector bodies from using the cloud service Google Apps.
The ruling – which bans Google cloud products such as calendar services, email and data processing functions – is based on inadequacies in the Google contract. A risk assessment by the Board determined that the contract gives Google too much covert discretion over how data can be used, and that public sector customers are unable to ensure that data protection rights are protected.
[...]
The decision may also trigger a disintegration of trust across Europe over the use by schools of such services. A recent survey revealed that schools are adopting cloud services at speed but that there is widespread concern over loss of control over the data.
