Pixar explains the 22 rules for great storytelling

If anyone should know, it's Pixar. Here are three:

1. You admire a character for trying more than for their successes.

2. You gotta keep in mind what’s interesting to you as an audience, not what’s fun to do as a writer. They can be very different.

3. Trying for theme is important, but you won’t see what the story is actually about til you’re at the end of it. Now rewrite.

See the other 19 here:

Facebook copied Google+ in order to be the opposite of Google+.

It's pretty obvious that Facebook improved their user interface by pretty directly copying Google+'s superior design. But from a business perspective, they did it in part to enable much bigger advertisements, which Google+ doesn't have.

+Gizmodo published a nice piece looking at Facebook's new, ginormous ad format:

Dita Von Teese wears a 3D printed dress designed on an iPad. Are you not entertained? Are. You. Not. Entertained?

American burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese is shown here wearing a dress make out of plastic powder that's been fused together with a "laser."

According to a post that I don't quite understand but am somehow still intrigued by, "Spirals based on the Golden Ratio were applied to a computer rendering of Von Teese's body so the garment fits her exactly." The dress was designed on an iPad.

A different picture of Ms. Von Teese wearing said dress was today's Mystery Pic. Plastic powder props to +Mark Palmberg for being first with the right answer!

Osama's son-in-law arrested and to be tried in New York.

#breakingnews   #alqaeda   #osamabinladen   #euromaestro

A son-in-law of Osama bin Laden faces arraignment on Friday in a federal court in New York, where he is charged with conspiracy to kill Americans.

Suleiman Abu Ghaith, a militant who appeared in videos representing al Qaeda after the September 11, 2001 attacks, was arrested in Turkey and brought to New York City to stand trial, U.S. government sources said.

Abu Ghaith is one of the highest-ranking al Qaeda figures to be brought to the United States to face a civilian trial.

"Among other things, Abu Ghaith urged others to swear allegiance to bin Laden, spoke on behalf of and in support of al Qaeda's mission, and warned that attacks similar to those of September 11, 2001 would continue," according to the indictment, which was announced on Thursday.

It accuses him of acting in a conspiracy that "would and did murder United States nationals anywhere in the world," listing actions before and after September 11, 2001.

Authorities said Abu Ghaith would be arraigned on Friday morning at U.S. District Court in downtown Manhattan, only blocks from the site of the World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the September 11 attacks.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder previously had announced plans to try defendants in the September 11 attacks in the same courthouse, but public opposition forced him to back down, and the trials were moved to the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Abu Ghaith initially was picked up in Turkey, deported to Jordan and brought to the United States in the last few days in an operation led by Jordanian authorities and the FBI, the sources said.

Very interesting clip to watch.

While chimpanzees can easily remember the place of 10 digits, humans struggle to do more than 6.

Thanks to +al pistacchio for providing the link to one of the tests. In the lumosity version of one of the tests, there are only 5 numbers to memorize and that's pretty difficult. As you can see in the clip, the chimpanzee can do it even with 10.

Facebook is a Zombie

Yesterday proved to me more than anything else, that Facebook is dying, might already be dead, and that they will never, ever, EVER get it right.

Here is why:

Every Android owner knows about that little blue icon on our devices for Google Now, which if you have not experienced it, represents the future while Facebook represents the past.

I woke from the alarm on my Note II at 5am yesterday, turned off the alarm, and pressed that little blue icon, and found out that the flight I would be on was delayed the day before but would be on time for my flight.

At that same time, Mark Zuckerburg was preparing to give a presentation telling investors how Facebook, through their visual updates, was hoping to keep me on Facebook longer, so that I would be exposed to more advertisements.

Because I was about to spend the day in various airports, I decided to try to sync my music to my phone using Spotify. This did not work, because the new Spotify install on my Note II would not allow me to use the sync function, because I had to have Spotify connected to Facebook.

I remembered that I had installed Google Drive on the Note II, so I just synced the music folder in the Note II and dragged a few selections from my desktop in to a new folder called "Music" and went back to my packing.

Before leaving for the airport, I read that Zuckerburg was on stage explaining that bigger images would be "more persuasive than words" which would cause Facebook users to better engage with content and advertisements. “The most important stuff is going to be on the front page,” he went on. “Then people have a chance to dig in.”

Did you get that? You are going to "better engage with advertisements", my brotha's. Umkay?

I have become a big fan of Peter Mansbridge on CBC, and worried that I might not be able to watch Canadian news while in America, so I asked Google Voice Search for a Proxy Server Solution, and it told me about "Tunnelbear" which will proxy Canada from America, and vice versa, letting me watch either online from the other location.

While this was going on, Julie Zhou, Facebook's design chief, said only that Facebook ads would be more visual. “Everything across the board is going to get this richer, more immersive design,” Ms. Zhou said.

Meanwhile, arriving at the airport, the Alaska Airlines app on my Note II reminded me that I should have my passport ready, and not just check in at a Kiosk. I was a bit ticked off, so I took a picture of my angry face and posted it on Google+, checking in my location at the same time.

The NY Times suggested the following: "The redesign is also a nod to the ubiquity of mobile devices, which a majority of Facebook’s one billion users worldwide use to log into their accounts. Pictures will show up bigger in the News Feed. And there will be larger images of maps and links to articles. In that way, the new look is a nod to other social networks that are seeing viral growth, like Pinterest, which is built around large pictures."

After my flight, I hopped on to a Supershuttle Van, and opened my Note II to Google Now, which promptly came up with an info-card telling me how long my trip would be on Supershuttle to my California home. I was totally blown away, but also noticed that my Android device and Google applications had worked FOR ME, throughout the entire day. Google and NFC (near field technology) made sure that throughout my day, I got the information I wanted WHEN I ASKED FOR IT.

You may be wondering why your Android device does not do what mine does. Have you turned on NFC and Location Services in your settings?

So, while Google and Android give me what I can use, when I decide I want to use it, Facebook is running around trying to shove more and larger pictures and advertisements in my face, as a way of keeping me more engaged. The funny thing? Since my Google+ stream is shared to Facebook and Twitter automatically, I never had to log in to Facebook at all.

P.S. Apple decided not to include NFC technology on the iPhone.
P.S.S.  I remember conversations last year, where +Jesse Wojdylo, +Eli Fennell and I were all saying that for Facebook to survive, they needed to stop throwing ads in our faces, and come up with a Facebook Phone. They didnt.

Google+ is the future. Facebook is already dead, and they dont even know it.

Question of the Day

Today is International Women’s Day, and this day always brings to mind thoughts of gender equality.

See, among other things, I’m a feminist. If anyone out there believes that feminist = man hater, then I would suggest checking a dictionary.

A feminist, to put it simply, is someone who works towards equal rights between men and women.

Now let me talk about rights. If a person wants to stay at home and raise kids, then that should be an option for them, regardless of gender. If a person wants to, and has the skill to, lead a country, or a corporation, then their gender should not matter, only their skill.

That is what feminism is asking for. Feminists aren't saying men should be subjugated, or women should all get out and work. Feminism is about giving women the same choices and opportunities as men, and vice versa.

I'm a feminist because I've been surrounded by strong, intelligent women all my life, and I feel that they shouldn't have to fight twice as hard for respect against people (male or female) who are not as smart as they are.

So my question for you, today, is:

Why do you support (or not, as the case may be) equal rights for women and men?

*Google+ Profiles+.  I took a look yesterday and couldn't believe how awful they were, so I decided to take a look with a fresh mind today.  I'm sorry, they are terrible - ugly, embarrassing and useless.  Google - what where you thinking?   I don't even know were to start - but I guess that almost full page useless profile image is as good a place as any - what the hell is that for?

I am told that this is the profile for the "designer" of this new profile http://goo.gl/cCJOc.  Do people seriously think this looks good?  An entire screen of pictures of old houses in San Francisco?  How soon will people get bored with that?  So now Google has blurred all my existing images and added an ugly purple tint - what I am supposed to do - put up a huge picture of San Diego for no reason?  Get a picture of me in some adventure scenes?  This now looks like it has been designed for children - it is one of the most ugly profile set ups I have seen on any social network, anywhere, at any time.

I have a small amount of experience in the area - I sometimes design custom social networks.  Here is an example of one I designed more than a decade ago: http://goo.gl/pBweG  - yes, that is quaint by today's standards, but at least it is immediately to the point.  Here is an example of one I developed more recently using open source software: http://goo.gl/E0vUs  Maybe that could be improved, but at least you know what it is about.

My profile here looks terrible now, and with present tools there is no way to fix it.  The text is now in a narrow band down the right hand side, so I guess the only way to fix that is to remove text.  The first thing people see on my profile - after those images that Google has purple blurred or some large meaningless picture they are forcing us to put there is a huge block called "people".  Who the hell cares"  That has nothing to do with me - at least not front and center like this - it was supposed to be my profile.

I'm sorry, this is still another example of Gooogle not "listening" - of deciding whatever they come up with in their GroupThink world is brilliant.  I assume this is intended to make Google+ for "photographers" but in doing so they continue their war on the written word and and seem to be doing everything they can to dumb this down.

Those of us who are trying to use Google+ for business are constantly swimming upstream, and maybe fighting a losing battle.  Those profiles look like crap - no one would what to show that to a client - it is either going to be embarrassingly ugly, or have little information except for a large, useless picture.  This is just another example that we all must remember, no matter how much work you put in here, Google can aways pull the rug out from under you.
